LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER
HE WORLD IS A VERY DIFFERENT
place to when I wrote my last edi- torial, pre-lock down. I hope that you and your families are healthy and coping in a landscape which has
changed so radically.
It’s been a stressful time for every-
one, although looking at our latest sur- vey it hasn’t been as catastrophic as we might have thought at the begin- ning of lockdown. Talking of stress, let’s please make sure we look out for each other. If you are a staff member who has been stood down, imagine the stress that has put on the owner of the business – reach out to them regularly and make sure that they are cop ing, hopefully they will soon be in
a position to take you back. If you are a business owner and have had to stand down staff, keep in contact with them regularly to see how they are travelling.
There is plenty that we can’t control so let’s focus on what we can control. Let’s try to see any downtime as an op- portunity to improve the business and upskill staff so that you emerge strong- er when work volumes return to pre- Covid19 levels.
Paint & Panel has produced a webi- nar and podcast with inspiration for us- ing any downtime effectively and there is a feature summarising some of the suggestions in this issue. I urge you to take an hour of your time and listen to the whole podcast or webinar, even if you only take one idea or inspiration away from it, it will be worthwhile. We’ve had over 1000 downloads of The Edge podcast already.
It’s not just about communicating with your colleagues, there has never been a more important time to commu- nicate with your customers both cur-
rent, previous and potential. You might not feel comfortable with the word ‘marketing’ but that is exactly what you have to do with your business now, more than ever before. Don’t think of it as marketing, think of it as communi- cating – communicating that you are an essential service, you are open, you are Covid-safe, you can pick up and de- liver – however you are adapting to current conditions. This should be done via social media, email, text, per- sonal phone calls – any and every ave- nue of communication. Again, there are some suggestions in this issue.
There is plenty that
we can’t control so let’s focus on what we can control. ”
As I write this every State but Victo- ria has begun to ease slowly off the lockdown brake and we are all begin- ning to feel cautiously optimistic. It has been the uncertainty that is causing the most anxiety and this will affect some more than others. There can be no shame for anyone to be over- whelmed at this time in history. What will make the difference is knowing that they have a network of people who are actively taking an interest in their welfare and that they can reach out to.
