FOR 2020
the best for 2020 from the Paint & Panel team. It’s been a horror start to the year with the bushfire crisis; I’ve found it very frightening. Another issue that is pushing me towards palpitations is scanning and recalibration. At one of the Paint & Panel events last year we asked the repairers in the room for a show of hands as to who performs pre and post
scans. There were very few raised.
With more and more advanced driver as- sistance features being introduced on new cars, with so many already in the car parc and with autonomous emergency braking becoming a requirement for a five star AN- CAP rating, scanning is now essential for the majority of repairs. If you are going to make one new year’s resolution for your business it should be to buy a unit and learn how to use it – as many of your coun- terparts have been doing, some of them for years. I-CAR has online courses available and often the equipment supplier offers training. It simply won’t be sustainable to farm out the scanning to a contractor, as it will slow down your cycle times too much. I’ve been talking to a lot of key players
on the subject of scanning and recalibra- tion and everyone agrees that the industry must get on board and get on board fast – like the windscreen replacement industry has. Anecdotal reports are that even some dealers struggle with carrying out recali- brations. Regardless, what they will be struggling with going forward is schedul- ing these recalibrations into their already busy workshops.
Your business must find a recalibration solution. Whether it’s investing in your own system and offering this service to other repairers in the area or investigating if there are any mobile services available. The first step is always training – your esti- mators and technicians must all learn what each of these systems do, when an accident or repair procedure will occasion recalibra- tion and how to have documented evidence that your repair has returned the custom- er’s car to pre-accident condition. The con- sequences of getting it wrong - well they are truly frightening.
