Digital Finishing
Skyline buys
JetVarnish
3D digital
embellishment
Skyline Printing bought the MGI JetVarnish 3D digital embellishing system from the Konica Minolta stand at PrintEx, having seen it the previous day, when it bought a new Konica Minolta 3080 digital colour press.
Owner of Chippendale-based Skyline Flora Zhao told Print21 that, “We saw the JetVarnish and it became apparent to us that it would be perfect for our clients
and would help us drive the business forward. “Its ability to produce raised spot UV and
to foil, all digitally, is a great fit for us. We work with a lot of corporates in the CBD. When I came on the stand to buy the 3080 and was taken around the JetVarnish I was happy, I could see straight away it was just what we needed.
“Our clients need high quality, with
a luxury look and feel, and they need it quickly. The JetVarnish will enable us to provide an on-demand service,” she said.
The JetVarnish 3D is manufactured by MGI, its vice president Kevin Abergele was at PrintEx.
Sue Threlfo, general manager Production Printing at Konica Minolta said, “Congratulations to Skyline. The JetVarnish is a real value-add solution, which will enable Skyline to strengthen its position in the market and get closer to its clients.”
The MGI range is not pitched at huge runs, adds Threlfo, national manager for industrial print . “These machines are suited for short-run, high-value customers, not vast amounts of embellishment work,” he said. “Once a customer has the type of clients that would make this a positive investment – based on value, not volume
– then we would advise them to invest in their own equipment.”
Threlfo believes this technology could be used for a wide range of applications. “It is suitable for book covers, high-
end brochures, promotional and even packaging work,” he said.
“This type of product really complements short-run packaging,
which is a growth sector in our industry
– examples of typical applications are whiskey boxes, labels for wines, and health and beauty.” 21

Quick and cost-effective finishing
With digital embellishment Digital technology is making on the rise, Neopost – soon embellishments such as foiling
time. Nowadays, with the Neolam 380, customers can actually foil whatever shape or size they want – all they do is print on their digital engine and the foil will just stick onto wherever there’s toner on the print. It doesn’t matter what engine you have. Simple process, low cost, and adds value to the finished product,” he says.
In spot UV, Neopost’s popular Duplo DDC-810 was launched at PacPrint 2017 and, over the past two years, has become a popular product in its portfolio.
“We’re trialling a unit with a new customer at this stage, and we’re working closely with a few customers at the moment for this solution.
“In a printing environment, seeing is one thing, but now customers want to touch and feel the finished product. With the DDC- 810, because it creates a raised image with varnish, customers can feel the finished goods. It’s a point of difference that adds value for customers,” says Nguyen. 21

and spot UV quicker and easier for printers. This adds touch and feel which can help deliver
the message of print, says Jimmy Nguyen, national product manager for graphics
at Neopost, which sells the Neolam 380 digital foiler and laminator suitable for
copy shops and franchise environments.
“Embellishment is definitely a huge growth area in the printing industry – everyone is now trying to differentiate themselves; for example, instead of having
a plain business card or just a laminate, they can now actually put digital foiling on it as well.
“Traditionally for foiling you need to create a die, which has a huge cost and also requires longer turnaround
