stantly refining processes to boost ef- ficiencies and promote quality repair outcomes. Sleman is ambitious and is pursuing the path of multi-site opera- tor. Although he isn’t a ‘corporation’ he is already thinking corporately in terms of customer care and the wellbe- ing of his team. He has a dedicated customer service officer, an OHS poli- cy which is reviewed quarterly and has recently recruited an HR manager to oversee all aspects of the wellbeing of the staff. The business is also a member of Diversity Australia.
Other sustainable initiatives include solar power and the recruitment of a dedicated parts interpreter who is tasked with making sure parts purchasing is at the best market rates possible.
5 Star also employs two apprentices who would have to have been pretty confident about their employment chances - they are both Sleman’s sons. He is hoping that one day he can pass the family business baton to them.
Let’s not forget the all-singing, all- dancing Hella Gutmann ADAS calibra- tion business which has had a bumpy
COVID-ridden start but has already been a lucrative additional service to offer other repairers and a workshop produc- tion boost now that most vehicles can be recalibrated on site.
Give Sleman time to catch his breath if the lockdown cycle is broken and I guar- antee he’ll be eyeing up other diversifi- cation options, or at least making sure all aspects of repairs happen in house instead of being subbed out.
The Abarth may have been stuck at a red light but the engine has been revving and the gas pedal is about to get stomped.
