Functional
and ready to go
Well hello there. We have been all about health and wellness in this office due to our health and functional food section this issue. The Naturally Good Expo at Sydney’s Darling Harbour was a complete eye-opener to this burgeoning sector. I even ate a cricket.
We have some fantastic contributions this issue including a piece by Sharon Natoli on the sustainable development of food. While there has been so much focus
on low fat, sugar and carbs, food and beverage manufacturers now have to be factoring in consumer awareness about supply chain transparency, ethical issues, the environment, packaging, recyclability and waste.
In our Materials Handling & Logistics feature we meet some entrepreneurs overhauling supply chain processes for food and beverage businesses. Barely up and running it has already secured more than $9 million in investment. I think they might be onto something.
I also love our story on two mates who wanted more kick from their coffee and thought maybe other people did too. Beforeyouspeak Coffee is fancy instant coffee with a range of additives for health and performance support.
Remember the razor company Remington Steele’s ad about its owner Victor Kiam “who liked the product so much he bought the company”? Well after interviewing the passionate CEO of food kit company Marley Spoon, Fabien Siegel, I signed up my household. Ready meals and meal kits are an example of a market only just taking off. Woolworths’ recent $30 million investment in the company sends the message it thinks so too.
In the midst of all the chia and extruded pea protein, along came Pat and Stick’s Homemade Ice Cream Co. Stick Seach is as tall as the day is long with passion for his ice cream sandwiches to rival that of a kid with a new bike. The company has been around for a few years now but is re-establishing itself in a consumer landscape very different from when it began.
Renewal, reinvention, innovation and passion really do drive this industry. Onward!
KIM BERRY
I was recently part of a segment on The Today Show talking about women’s health, which ties is to this issue’s feature on health and functional foods. Also, I shall now only be photographed in the presence of TV lighting.
