Bali Hai calls on Sidel for a new

A growing market for beer has prompted Bali Hai Brewery Indonesia to upgrade capacity. A new canning line – designed and installed by Sidel – delivers higher production speeds and a new size format while maintaining the quality of Bali Hai’s beers.
Bali Hai packaging manager Blegog Sugiono said the company opted for the latest Sidel volumetric electronic filler largely because of the very low total oxygen pick-up it ensures, which leads to a high-quality product.
“Plus, we now use a volumetric technology, so as to guarantee that our cans all have the intended quan- tity of product when reaching the shelf,” he said.
The installed Pama pasteuriser, which includes Sidel’s Prince Plus software, was tailored around Bali Hai’s requirements.
Sugiono said the decision to install the system was to have a constant level of quality and consistent taste across the products.
“Specifically, we have been able to further cool down the can tempera- ture at the outfeed of the pasteuriser, therefore eliminating the risk of unstable quality we have experi- enced in the past,” he said.
“With this latest technology, we can now narrowly adjust and control the pasteurisation unit in accor- dance with the specified settings for a fully controlled beer taste.”
END OF THE LINE
Sugiono said the new line has a sophis- ticated tray and film solution that can produce various packing alternatives.
“For example, four – or six-packs wrapped on one tray containing a total of 24 cans can run on one solu- tion,” he said.
ALI Hai’s new Sidel canning line runs at up to 33,000 cans per hour for the 330ml format – twice as fast as the brewery’s former line. It can also handle 500ml cans.
Bali Hai Brewery is Indonesia’s fourth-largest domestic brewery with a 3.2 per cent share in local beer market in 2018. The company has been producing and exporting beer since 1975.
Bali Hai technical director Daniel To said the company’s products are sold in more than 20 countries, including Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand.
“While capturing the opportuni- ties offered by a consumer demand that is continuously increasing, we are committed to maintaining the consistent taste and quality of our beers,” he said.
Despite strong regulation of alco- hol in Indonesia, the beer segment in the country is growing; it is pre- dicted to see a compound annual growth rate of seven per cent to reach 324 million litres by 2023.
It is in response to this trend that Bali Hai made the decision to invest
in the new canning line, and in so doing, partnered with Sidel for the first time.
A JOURNEY TO EFFICIENCY
Bali Hai had been working to increase efficiency for several years before beginning the process of add- ing the new line.
In 2013, the company carried out major renovations of its brewhouse and cellar and automated processes.
Daniel To said the floor space at the plant is limited, so the company needed a compact canning line that did not compromise efficiency or flexibility.
“Despite the fact that we were ini- tially planning a line delivering 24,000 cans per hour for the 500ml format, we eventually trusted Sidel’s engineers and went for a complete line that is able to reach up to 29,000 cans per hour, thus securing high- capacity production for the coming years,” he said.
The complete canning line includes 13 machines, laid out in six production modules: the de-palle- tiser; the filler and seamer; the pas- teuriser; the dryers; the shrink-wrap- per; and the conveying systems.
