Paris-aligned climate scenarios into their pol- icy frameworks and energy transition path- ways,” the statement said.
It was supported by Australia's Shadow Min- ister for Climate Change and Energy, Mark But- ler, who accused the Federal Government of not doing enough to reduce emissions.
“In stark contrast, Labor’s targets are based on scientific advice of what is needed to deliver the Paris goal of passing on a sustainable cli-
mate to future generations; a cut in emissions of 45 per cent by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050,” he said.
“Carbon pollution has gone up every year since the Liberals took office and the Government’s own data shows it will continue rising to 2030.
“Over the last year pollution levels have risen by 1.5 per cent – with seasonally adjusted data showing emissions jumped by 0.83 per cent in just the last quarter alone.”

sider a total of 10 natural feedback processes, some of which are “tipping elements” that lead to abrupt change if a critical threshold is crossed.
These tipping elements can potentially act like a row of dominoes making some places on Earth uninhabitable if “Hothouse Earth” be- comes a reality. If a cascade of events occur it could tip the entire Earth system into a new mode of operation.
Maximizing the chances of avoiding a “Hot- house Earth” requires not only reduction of car- bon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions but also enhancement and/or creation of new biological carbon stores, for example, through improved forest, agricultural and soil manage- ment; biodiversity conservation; and technolo- gies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmos- phere and store it underground, the study said.
Prior to the study being published hundreds of institutional investors with $US26 trillion under management called on governments across the globe to raise their pledges under the Paris Climate Agreement stating that ex- isting targets will fail to keep global warming below 2 degrees.
The call to action by international investors is known as the 2018 Global Investor Statement to Governments on Climate Change.
“It is vital for our long-term planning and asset allocation decisions that governments work closely with investors to incorporate
Global map of potential tipping cascades. The individual tipping elements are color-coded according to estimated thresholds in global average surface temperature (tipping points). Arrows show the potential interactions among the tipping elements based on expert elicitation that could generate cascades.
