  TRUCK ACCIDENTS
                   BRIEFS
A REVIEW OF ALMOST TWO DECADES OF
data since NTI commenced its landmark Major Accident Report back in 2005 re- veals significant improvements in the trucking industry’s safety performance, but challenges remain.
Taking account of a 55 per cent increase in trucks on the road (to 640,651) and a 51 per cent rise in road freight volumes (to 224.6 billion-tonne-per-kilometre) since 2003, the data reveals a combination of tighter government regulation and indus- try investment in safety, technology, pro- fessional development and leadership has seen a steady decline of around 0.04
deaths/BTK per year in all heavy-truck-in- volved road crash deaths over the period.
There has been dramatic improvement in the area of incidents caused by fatigue and inappropriate speed however the data exposes a dramatic increase in major ac- cidents caused by ‘human factors’ which include fatigue and inappropriate speed, but more importantly inattention/distrac- tion, inappropriate vehicle positioning and inadequate following distance.
Combined, these factors now repre- sent nearly two out of every three seri- ous crashes (63.5 per cent), up just over one percentage point on prior years.

Battery electric car sales have soared this year. FCAI reports that during September 2022, 7,247 battery electric vehicles were sold, more than hybrid and plug-in-hybrid combined (5,141). Year to date, 21,771 battery electric vehicles have been sold. “While the overall market share of battery electric vehicles remains low (2.7 per cent), there is a clear market trend towards zero emission technology,” FCAI’s Tony Weber said.
The Toyota Hi-Lux was the highest selling model; the Ford Ranger followed with Tesla’s Model Y coming in third place selling 4,359 units.
