Defence South Australia
The Defence State
SOUTH AUSTRALIA is leading the way in the development of Australia’s defence industry. Defence is a critical sector for South Australia’s economy, helping drive investment opportunities and creating thousands of high-tech jobs.
Renowned for its world-class defence industry and highly skilled workforce, South Australia is home to seven of the world’s top 10 defence companies and a strong cluster of defence-related small to medium enterprises (SMEs). More than 200 innovative businesses in South Australia provide goods and services directly to the Australia Defence Force, and deliver into the supply chains of prime contractors in Australia and around the world.
South Australia is the national centre for naval shipbuilding and submarine sustainment, with a world-class maritime indus- try base delivering some of Australia’s largest and most complex naval projects including the Air Warfare Destroyers (pictured below) and the Collins class submarines. South Australia will
play a key role in delivering the $90 billion naval shipbuilding pro- gram, including the Future Frigates and Future Submarines, along with the first two Offshore Patrol Vessels. These major projects will create up to 5200 core and supporting jobs by 2026. South Australia is home to the Naval Shipbuilding College, which will incorporate a network of high-quality education providers across the country to train Australia’s naval shipbuilding workforce.
Through the virtual shipyard program and cyber ready forums, South Australia is helping local companies develop the digital capabilities necessary to compete for the wealth of supply chain opportunities available through the Naval Shipbuilding Plan and the development of sovereign defence industry capabil- ity more broadly.
South Australia is a hub of cyber and systems, with strong expertise in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and
electronic warfare. A cluster of leading defence aerospace companies and agile SMEs are supporting key Defence projects including the delivery of components for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program and major upgrades to the JORN.
South Australia is also leading the way in the emerging space industry, which has strong technological synergies with defence. With more than 60 space-related organisations calling the state home and a growing workforce of around 800 people, South Australia is primed to play a key role in the international economy.
South Australia’s defence industry is underpinned by world-class research and development capabilities. The state is home to the Defence Science and Technology Group’s largest Australian operation, which works closely with South Australia’s three universities – the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University – to find innovative solutions for Defence and defence-related projects. The Defence Innovation Partnership is a new organisation, based in South Australia, generating defence-related research activity and collaboration between government, local universities and other research organisations and industry.
