Hon Christopher Pyne MP
MINISTER FOR DEFENCE INDUSTRY
THE AUSTRALIAN Government is committed to ensuring the Australian Defence Force has the equipment it needs to fight and win, while boosting the Australian defence industry nation wide.
To do this we’ve commenced the largest ever renewal of Defence capability, investing approximately $195 billion across the decade, with a resulting boost to the economy. It’s an investment underpinned by a new approach to procurement and a roadmap for industry in the form of the Defence Industry Policy Statement and the Integrated Investment Program.
I have been appointed as Minister for Defence Industry to deliver that capability to our Defence forces, whilst ensuring a strong and active Defence industry sector is in place to underpin it.
Australian industry is critical to developing and maintaining the future Australian Defence Force. It is a Fundamental Input to Capability. We are determined to build a closer, more strategic relationship with industry to deliver better capability outcomes for Defence.
At the Land Forces conference in Adelaide I met with businesses big and small, from radar makers and drone developers to gasket suppliers and fuel point designers.
I travelled to the US to make the case for greater Australian industry involvement in the Joint Strike Fighter project, working towards achieving a total of $2 billion in contracts by 2023.
And the Government is driving on with our Continuous Naval Shipbuilding program, an ambitious program and a truly national endeavour that sees us building 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels, nine Future Frigates, 12 Submarines and up to 21 Pacific Patrol Boats in South Australia and Western Australia. These projects alone will create over 5000 jobs, benefiting the entire country.
We’re launching the Centre for Defence Industry Capability later this year, bringing Defence and Industry together, and involving a fundamentally new approach to innovation through our Defence Innovation Hub and Next Generation Technology Fund.
To companies looking to do business with defence I say this: the time is now right. We are committed to this endeavour and to expanding opportunities for Australian businesses.
I’m working hard to ensure that every time a new edition of this volume is released there are a few new companies listed, those who have seen the opportunities working with Defence holds.
I won’t be able to do it alone.
