CHEF AND RESTAURATEUR JESSI SINGH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SOME OF MELBOURNE’S BEST MODERN INDIAN. AFTER THE SUCCESS OF HIS BABU JI IN ST KILDA, HE TOOK THE DINER TO NEW YORK IN 2015, WHERE IT WAS HAILED ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST EXCITING RESTAURANTS. NOW, RETURNING TO MELBOURNE TO OPEN HIS LATEST “INAUTHENTIC” INDIAN-AUSTRALIAN JOINT, DAUGHTER IN LAW, SINGH REVISITS HIS OLD HAUNTS, AND HAS DISCOVERED SOME NEW FAVOURITES. HE GAVE US A TOUR.
BREAKFAST – MITTE CAFE
They have delicious, healthy breakfasts, smoothies and the best coffee in Fitzroy North. All the staff are super friendly and accommodating with family- oriented service.
LONG LUNCH – HUTONG
My favourite spot for a long lunch during the week. They have an affordable lunch menu of generously portioned dishes. Order the spicy steamed fish, eggplant clay pot and, of course, dumplings.
SPECIAL OCCASION – DI STASIO CITTA
Di Stasio Citta’s one-of-a-kind dining room, handmade pasta and great cocktails make this Italian restaurant a must for anyone in Melbourne. But don’t skip
the original Di Stasio
in St Kilda.
LATE NIGHT – HEARTBREAKER
A slice of cheese pizza and a Negroni or two is what you’ll see continually on my receipts. It’s one of the best venues in Melbourne to gather friends, play pool
and unwind.
OUT OF TOWN – SOCIAL FOUNDRY
If you’re up for a drive, head to this not-for-profit cafe in Kyneton, an hour out of Melbourne. The outdoor area is great to hang out and chat with the locals, while supporting the community over some stellar coffee.
WINE AND SNACKS – NEIGHBOURHOOD WINE
The best wine bar in Melbourne. They have a massive by-the-glass selection from all around the world. Take a seat at the bar and let the friendly staff look after you.
