Obviously there will be challenges, but we’ve been given a once in a lifetime oppor- tunity and industry, defence, academia and government need to step up to the mark and work together to achieve the outcome of a well-equipped and capable defence force.
ADM: What do you think the Life of Type Extension (LOTE) program for the Collins class will look like in terms of ca- pability?
SANDER: The LOTE will be critical to our submarine capability for the next two decades or more. The LOTE is especially significant to me as I commanded the last Oberon class Otama on its final operation- al deployment. We were very fortunate that we were able to modify the submarine then with some excellent local capability.
I expect Collins will be the same. There will be the opportunity to develop some of the capabilities in preparation for the Future Submarine. We should leverage where possible from technology in FSM, to allow new technology to be trialled in Collins. This would assist in subma-
riners becoming exposed to the future FSM equipment, provide operational feedback, reduce certification testing and potentially decrease risks. I see this as a win-win situation.
I suggest that the opportunity would pro- vide a means to emphasise the importance of the success Collins LOTE as an essential basis for the success of Sea 1000. Quite apart from the strategic role that Collins
capabilitycurrentlyprovides,thereistheno less vital role for extended Collins in pro- viding the training to ensure that there is a qualified and experienced workforce ready to crew the Future Submarine.
The SIA has made the Collins LOTE the subject of our next annual conference in November in Canberra. I would encourage people to come along and contribute to this most important activity.
