Essington Lewis award winners announced

The event brought together hundreds of leading figures from Defence and industry to recognise programs
that have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

THIS year's winners are:
Major Acquisition over $50 million
Hawk Upgrades: BAE Systems Australia and Lead-In Fighter Capability Assurance Program Office
Working with an international OEM team under a new safety framework, personnel from Defence and BAE Systems Australia worked tirelessly to update numerous sys- tems, introduce simulators and upgrade the Hawk Lead In Fighter to a standard worthy of a fifth generation Air Force un- der strained budget circumstances. An ex- cellent demonstration of true collaboration under pressure.
Minor Acquisition under $50 million
Optus C1 Satellite Life of Type Extension: Optus and CIOG
Working with literal rocket science, the CIOG-led integrated project team was
able to work with Optus to reposition the Optus C1 satellite to extend its life and ca- pability to the ADF. With numerous space and ground elements to address, the team was able to save the Commonwealth a sig- nificant number of dollars while providing constant satcom service to a bandwidth hungry organisation well beyond the initial contract timeframe.
Major Sustainment over $50 million
Armidale Sustainment: Thales Australia and the Patrol Boat Systems Office Sustainment of the Armidale fleet required a complete reset of both people and con- tracting given its troubled past. With new industry partners, the SPO and refreshed industry team led by Thales have been able to deliver increased readiness, reliability and performance. The numbers behind the performance improvements on all fronts are spectacular and testament to what
