Europeans look to ASC for submarine expertise
ASC has signed separate agreements with Jeumont and Saab on submarine design and service delivery for the Collins class, the Future Submarines, and Sweden’s A-26 class submarines.
THE first agreement with Jeumont opens the way for joint initiatives in support of the Collins Class and Future Submarine programs. Under the agreement, Jeumont Electric and ASC will cooperate on the delivery of services supporting the ongoing sustainment and upgrade of the Collins class, as well as in preparation to support the design, build and test of the main motors for the Future Submarines.
Jeumont Electric is the supplier of the main motors for the Collins Class fleet and the preferred supplier of new generation permanent magnet motors for the Future Submarine program.
“ASC is the home of Australia’s existing submarine expertise, employing about 1,200 skilled personnel with a huge amount of experience in submarines in the Australian context,” ASC Chief Executive Officer Stuart Whiley said.
“We look forward to jointly working with Jeumont, in Australia and in France, to expand our capabilities and support Australia’s historic submarine industry expansion in coming years.”
The agreement with Saab covers provision of a range of services, including engineering, for the A26 submarine program. Two A-26 class subs are being built for the Royal Swedish Navy.
ASC CEO Stuart Whiley (R) and Saab Australia MD Andy Keough sign the agreement at the Submarine Institute of Australia conference
in Canberra.
ASC and Saab will launch a pilot program that will see ASC’s submarine designers deliver specialist design services in Adelaide for the A-26s. When the pilot is completed, ASC will provide ongoing services to Saab across various projects.
“The Saab-ASC engagement recognises ASC’s up-to-date design-to-build capability first developed in the Collins project in partnership with Kockums in the 1980s and 1990s,” Whiley said.
“We are delighted to again be engaged with Saab, this time supporting the Swedish A26 project.”
“This agreement with ASC is another example of Saab’s commitment to the Australian Submarine enterprise and will facilitate engineering knowledge and experience transfer between Australia and Sweden,” Managing Director of Saab Australia Andy Keough said.

1. The “Croc” – a pneumatic assisted ground coupler lifter; taking
the weight and awkwardness out of connecting and discon-
necting the pit coupler when refuelling.
2. The “Gecko” – a mini hydrant dispenser vehicle ergonomically
designed to overcome some of the key Occupational Safety Hazards associated with narrow bodied aircraft refuelling operations.
