it evolves to reflect how the physical product has been used and altered and to show the environmental conditions to which it has been exposed. As an avatar of the real product, its Digital Twin allows the company to view its status and condition thousands of miles away.”
be used in the construction of the F-110 frigates for the Spanish Navy. Using a similar approach, Navantia Austra- lia will develop a Ship Zero concept and updated 3D models and future digital twins for the four classes of ship covered under the agreement with the RAN.
“The digital ship approach is a means to further enhance the service level for each class of ship to the Common- wealth of Australia and ensure that all integrated logistic support items accurately reflect the Australian configura- tion of all four classes of ships,” García-Valdés said.
IP AND SMART SUSTAINMENT
To adopt the digital twin approach and enable its benefits to be felt in Australia, Navantia SA SME is transferring the Design Authority for the ship designs to Navantia Australia, effectively allowing naval design work to take place in of- fices in Melbourne and Sydney rather than in Spain.
“Navantia Australia will ensure that ship design authority is transferred and fully supported from Australia, includ- ing the legacy data transfer including all designs data and updating 3D models,” Jamie Gibbs, Navantia Australia’s En- gineering Director, said to ADM. “This transfer will ensure that Navantia Australia can upkeep, upgrade and update the designs through our naval designers in Melbourne through- out the ships’ operational life.”
“WHILST UNPRECEDENTED IN SCALE, THE AGREEMENT IS BUILT ON A PROVEN DIGITAL APPROACH SIMILAR TO THOSE IN USE ELSEWHERE.”
Using this avatar, Navantia is able to run simulations that allow for predic- tive maintenance: rather than fixing problems as they arise, they are pre- venting problems from arising at all.
“In the virtual environment of the product, the data obtained throughout the life cycle (from the design phase to maintenance) is analysed to gener- ate simulations that allow identifying corrective actions and recommending preventive actions,” García-Valdés said. “Once the product is delivered, the vir- tual environment is transferred to the
client, who will be able to exploit all the advantages that it can offer them, such as the simulation of operating scenarios, ap- plication of artificial intelligence (combat, fault diagnosis etc), and savings by optimising maintenance of teams and so on.”
The company’s first integrated digital twin approach, de- veloped in collaboration with Accenture and Siemens, will
