capability but the automation inherent in next generation IFVs makes that a whole lot simpler than with legacy vehicles. We actually know quite a bit about this because of an ongoing project with BAE Systems Australia to convert old M113s for autonomous operations to examine this capability, testing both the technology and operational concepts. The vision is to eventually acquire around 20 vehicles to fully test
the ideas in the field in a combined arms setting.
It isn’t even that expensive as the Army already has a large fleet of recently upgraded M113s. The key autonomous IP resides in a black box developed by BAE Systems over a num- ber of years – a version with multiple redundancy operate
flight controls on Boeing’s Loyal Wingman.
The Army is thinking long and hard about where to go
with robotic technology. Its Robotic and Autonomous Sys- tems (RAS) Strategy was released in October 2018 and vari- ous trials are continuing.
The hard-working diggers may be the first to benefit with the Praesidium Global Mule able to carry some of their gear. The Force Structure Plan will take this a whole lot further. It proposes a coordination office for implementation of ro-
botics and autonomous systems across the land force. There’s more. It proposes acquisition of a fleet of uncrewed vehicles up to brigade size to support land operations. The
unmanned future is closer than ever. ■
