processing technology, to identify and exploit new applications.
“Thanks to technical advances, refrigerants can now be used safely, efficiently and, above all, cost-effectively. This opens up new areas of ap- plication for refrigeration systems in both the private and commercial sectors, offering high growth opportunities.
"Clearly, we want to be part of that growth.”
Propane (Drivosol R290) has high energy effi- ciency and excellent thermodynamic and refrig- eration properties. As an efficient and environ- mentally friendly refrigerant substitute, propane is particularly suitable for use in air conditioning systems that are also operated at high outside temperatures (>+50degC).
The natural refrigerants Drivosol R600 (n-bu- tane) and Drivosol R600a (isobutane) are charac- terised above all by better operating perfor- mance with lower refrigerant charge when compared to conventional refrigerants.
EVONIK, A SPECIALTY chemicals company, has introduced three new natural refrigerants throughout Europe.
In a statement the company said this has been made possible primarily by adapting production processes.
The most recent result of these adaptations are three hydrocarbon-based gases: n-butane (Drivosol R600), isobutane (Drivosol R600a), and propane (Drivosol R290).
These three products, all of which also oc- cur naturally, can be used as environmental- ly friendly and energy-efficient refrigerants in various appliances. This gives manufac- turers of refrigerators, freezers, air condi-
tioners and heat pumps a new alternative to existing products.
Over the last few years, the use of high-quality hydrocarbons has proven its worth due to their good compatibility and miscibility with the most common cooling lubricants.
"We have many years of experience in the pro- duction of odorless liquefied gas mixtures, which we offer under the brand name Drivosol," accord- ing to Sarah Kranz, marketing manager at Evon- ik Performance Intermediates.
"The most important characteristic is its high purity, which has so far been used primarily in aerosols for deodorants or shaving foam. We have now used our experience, particularly in re-
Large capacity model for C-puzzle series
MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES Air-Condi- tioning and Refrigeration Corporation has devel- oped a large-capacity 80 horsepower (HP) model to add to its series of "C-puzzle" fluorocarbon- free commercial refrigeration condensing units.
The new unit uses R744, a natural refrigerant of carbon dioxide (CO2).
“THE NEW MODEL RESPONDS TO DEMANDS FOR LARGER CAPACITY REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS.”
The new model responds to increasing demand for larger-capacity refrigeration systems that use natural refrigerants, especially for food refrigera- tion applications such as cold storage facilities. The new 80HP model C-puzzle realizes environ- mental load reduction initiatives through energy saving and using the natural refrigerant. It is sched-
uled to go on sale in the northern summer 2021. The 80HP model C-puzzle will complement the 10HP model (HCCV1001) and 20HP model (HCCV2001M) launched since 2017 and the 40HP model added to the C-puzzle series in 2020. Intro- duction of the 80HP model will not only respond to rising demand for larger-capacity refrigeration systems, but also expand the range of applica- tions beyond refrigerated storage to further in-
clude food freezing and ice making.
As with earlier models in the C-puzzle series, the
new 80HP model is equipped with a proprietary two-stage compressor integrating a scroll com- pressor and a rotary compressor developed and manufactured by MHI Thermal Systems.
The scroll compressor delivers superlative ef- ficiency under heavy loads, while the rotary compressor offers outstanding efficiency with lighter loads. Together, they result in higher effi- ciency and noise reduction through the entire operating range. In addition, integrated compact design of the gas cooler and the compressor unit helps to reduce plumbing, thus making the new unit suitable to diverse locations.

The refrigerant used in the C-puzzle is R744, a natural refrigerant of carbon dioxide (CO2) and an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of its refriger- ant is zero and global warming potential (GWP) is only 1. As a result, the environmental impact is very low, making a significant contribution to the prevention of global warning.
