THERE IS STILL AN ALARMING AMOUNT OF IGNORANCE IN THE INDUSTRY WHEN IT COMES TO A VEHICLE’S RECALIBRATION NEEDS. ADRIAN PARKES FROM ADAS SOLUTIONS HIGHLIGHTS THE TOP 10 MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS.
C CHECKTHISLISTANDBESURE you haven’t ever thought the following and if you have,
make sure you don’t again.
1THERE IS NO WARNING LIGHT ON,
SO IT DOESN’T NEED DOING
ADAS calibration rarely triggers a warn- ing light – in fact, only in extreme cir- cumstances. It is an operational process that forms part of a manufacturer’s safe repair method, it is not a fault.
2THERE WERE NO FAULT CODES
ON THE SCAN REPORT
As with the lack of a warning light, a cali- bration is an operational safety require- ment. It is not the clearing of a fault code and will rarely raise a fault code. Howev- er, once a vehicle has been through a cali- bration, that process may trigger a fault code. It is essential scans are carried out pre-calibration, post–calibration and post–road test when all systems have been correctly tested. All three scan reports should be produced as evidence of correct process — even from dealerships.
3I DROVE THE CAR AND IT FELT FINE TO ME
ADAS test drives are specific to the individual manufacturer’s methods. All functions must be switched on and test- ed. Often speeds of 80kmph for a de- fined period must be maintained, which is challenging in urban areas but essen- tial. An ADAS test drive is not a quick run round the block.

dependent companies offering the ser- vice, but stick to industry specialists. You must ensure anyone carrying out an ADAS calibration has the correct train- ing and relevant state accreditations.

It will be in the method, not the panel repair method you are familiar with looking at, rather the technical ser- vice schedules the manufacturers op- erate through. These are generally available on a pay per view basis, or deal with a company that has already paid for the license and can supply the information.

It took serious, often fatal events to change the thoughts of many that OEM methods were essential. Crash investi- gators are now focusing on the correct performance of ADAS systems, espe- cially in circumstances where correct performance should have prevented the accident.
HOW AM I MEANT TO EDUCATE MYSELF?
ADAS Solutions – with MTAQ – now offers a full range of training and will deliver training in all states in the com- ing months. There are currently very few Australian courses available.
