GETTING IT RIGHT
The two top reasons why abrasives fail, reported to Saint-Gobain Australia;
1. Incorrect mounting
2. Incorrect use
It is important to mount the correct wheel or disc size on any
air or electric powered tool. Some wheels can reach speeds up to 38,200 RPM, using the wrong wheel can result in the abrasive doubling its speed with catastrophic product failure and will likely result in operator injury.
All abrasive products are designed for specific applications
and substrate conditions. Cutting wheels for example are flat and should be used at a 90-degree angle ensuring your work piece is fixed and secure. Grinding wheels on the other hand are designed
to be used at an angle between 30-45 degrees. Always remember do not stop the wheel by applying pressure to the periphery or face.
Other important points for abrasive safety;
• There is no reason whatsoever to remove a safety guard from an angle grinder
• Always ensure that the guard is positioned correctly to protect you and direct the
sparks away from your body
• Always check the correct machine guard is attached and in place
• Always check that the guard fits around the abrasive product
• Always check the machine guard is positioned between the wheel and the machine operation
• Never grind with a cutting wheel
