ACCURATE MEASURING
“When repairing late model cars, you should be measuring during the entire repair process with a quality computerised measuring system, which you can’t do on a floor rack. The tolerances on vehicles don’t let you get away with much today and knowing exactly where the chassis rails are is more im- portant than ever. ‘Pulling blind’ just doesn’t make sense.
“With a computerised measuring system, you can leave the pointer on a specific measuring point while you pull the area needing alignment. The system will show you in mil- limetres how far you are moving that part in real time. This again helps you repair quicker, more accurately and can eliminate the chance of ‘over pulling’, putting less stress on the vehicle and equipment.
“Drive on benches are great. You could drive straight on, lift it up just to take a bar cover off if you wanted to. They can make it easier to quote, perfect for any size repair and the setup time is reduced which means you are not only getting into the repair quicker but repairing quicker — and quicker repairs equals more profit,” Hugo said.
INTOLERANT TOLERANCES
Jason Trewin of I-CAR said: “At one point a floor mounted vehicle alignment system like a ‘flat rack’ would have tak- en pride and place in any bodyshop. This was of the same time when vehicle build tolerances were somewhat more ‘forgiving’ than they are now.
Trewin points out: “Vehicles are now being constructed with tolerances between 0-2 mm and it requires accurate three dimensional measuring, perfect alignment tech- niques and precision equipment, to reinstate the vehicles collision energy personality after it has been damaged.”
