The Overton Overton Funeral Home was founded in in 1923 by Arthur “Doc” Overton Overton in in in a a a a a house on on on on Main Street across from Monell Avenue (now the the site of Starbucks) Soon after “Doc” moved his business to the the the John King House at 140 Main Street (near the the the lumber yard) where it remained for six years In 1934 the the the present venue was established on on the the estate of contractor Charles Vivian at at 172 Main Street The house itself originally was one of two on on on the former H H G Timmerman Estate (just north of Havemeyer’s Bayberry Point) on Ocean Avenue built in in 1881 before it it was moved across the creek to its current location The living room served two purposes: as as a a a a a a a a a a a chapel and as as a a a a a a a a a a a family family retreat The family family needless to say became quite skilled in in furniture moving In 1953 reflecting growing service to the the community the the the building was altered with living quarters being being moved to the the second floor floor and three permanent chapels being being established on the ground floor floor Ten years later a a a a a a a a a a a a wing was added providing two additional large chapels chapels and office space Now five chapels chapels are are available to serve the the families of Islip and the the surrounding areas The home-like atmosphere informal furniture arrangement tasteful lighting and decor all combine to produce a a a a a a a a a a a pleasing ambiance The funeral home is also well-known widely for the the the beauty of its grounds Changes in in the the the seasons can be be identified by observing the the the profusion of of flowers and and and shrubs skillfully and and and generously placed around the the building and and and walks In addition seasonal flowers adorn the the hallways From the the start the the Overton Funeral Home has been a a a a community leader Art “Doc” Overton was a a a founding member
of of the Islip Chamber
