Michael Gorton Licensed Funeral Director
Michael J. Gorton, Jr., CFSP,
knew he wanted to be a funeral director at a young age. As a young boy he recalls running around the funeral home after his uncle and godfather, Charles Lorey, wondering what he was doing. He remembers watching hearses pull in the courtyard of Morton Funeral Home in Ridgewood, Queens after funerals.
When Michael was getting ready to choose a college, he knew he wanted to go to school that would give him the best education and put him in the best position to help people. He chose St. John’s University and enrolled in their Mortuary Science program. For four years Michael attended the Queens campus of St. John’s getting his Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service Administration and minoring in Business Administration. One of the years was spent in NYC studying at American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service. Michael graduated in the Spring of 1995 from St. John’s ready to serve those in need.
Following graduation, before Michael could become licensed in the State of New York, he had to do a one year residency in a funeral home. He chose to continue his training at the same funeral home his uncle did, Morton Funeral Home. In the early fall of 1997, Michael
was licensed by the State of New York to practice funeral directing.
In February of 1998 he decided to join the family funeral home in Medford, NY and become a director under his aunt and uncle at McManus-Lorey Funeral Home. Michael has cherished his time working under his aunt and uncle, learning the ropes of a family business while giving every family the utmost care and attention that they deserve. No family is alike and Michael prides himself at working to be part of each family that trusts him and McManus-Lorey Funeral Home with the care of their loved one. Michael has always said, “I truly enjoy working with each family to honor their loved one they entrust us to care for. If I can make them feel at ease and perhaps take a burden off of their shoulders, then I have done my service to them at the worst possible time in their lives.
Michael has been involved in the Medford community for a very long time. He has served on community round tables with legislative leaders, he is a past president of Medford Chamber of Commerce.
In July of 2020, Michael was elected President of the Nassau Suffolk Funeral Directors Association. He has served on the board in various positions including Vice-President, Bylaws, Nomination, Health Facilities liaison as well as co- chairperson on the EDRS Ad Hoc Committee.
Michael is also an active board member in the New York State Funeral Directors Association. In 2017, Michael was selected to be apart of the New York State Funeral Directors Association Leadership Academy. He graduated in in August of 2018. He currently is Chairperson of the Tribute Foundation. He is also part of the Bridge Commission and serves on the Convention and Continuing Education Committee and the Government Affairs Committee.
