What Is Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the com-
pression of the median nerve at the
wrist, under the transverse carpal
ligament. It is caused by the
increase of pressure or swelling
within the carpal tunnel. It can be
from overuse, trauma, pregnancy,
systemic disease or a cyst.
Symptoms include tingling and numbness to the thumb,
index, middle and half of ring finger, and can be painful. It
is common to awaken at night with these symptoms and
feel the need to shake the hand out.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can also result in weakness of
the small muscles in the hand, which can cause you to
drop objects.
