COURSE DESCRIPTIONS continued
Students will examine the significance of dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyse how the knowledge and skills developed in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness, and goals beyond secondary school.
NON-CREDIT COURSES Communication and Culture
Students who are not enrolled in one of the three French credit courses or AP French will be enrolled in a French Communication and Culture class. This is a non-credit course in conversational French geared to the student's level, based on an assessment.
It runs for 80 minutes per week and helps students to become more comfortable, confident and knowledgeable when they speak French and integrate into the local
culture. In addition to in-class learning, the teacher also arranges outings and student exchanges with local Swiss students to make this course fun and interesting.
Conversational German and Italian
These courses are offered through the local language school in Neuchâtel at an additional cost and are helpful for students wishing to learn these official languages of Switzerland.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)
AP is developed by the College Board in conjunction with high schools, colleges, and universities. AP provides a rigorous university/college level curriculum for students in their last years of high school. After an examination in May of each year, students submit their grades to universities and may qualify for university credit or advanced placement. Regardless of university recognition, AP provides students with an enriched curriculum as they prepare for university.
As is the case in the majority of Ontario High Schools, NJC students who wish to prepare for an AP examination will register in the corresponding Grade 12 course in that subject. Our teachers will work with AP students to ensure their preparedness for the
AP exam, inclusive of providing higher-level instruction, assignments and feedback. AP students benefit from studying university-level material with the individual and small group attention afforded by our small class sizes. Given that AP is at the university level
where increased academic autonomy is expected, AP students are also expected to work independently more so than their Grade 12 program peers.
AP is designed for motivated students who are seeking to study material at the first- year university level and who have the goal of earning university credits prior to university enrollment. NJC students may opt to study from a wide variety of AP examinations depending on their areas of expertise and subject interests. Students should discuss their intent to study AP with the Director of University Guidance during their pre-departure guidance consultation.
Popular AP exam choices in recent years have included:
● Art History / Studio Art: Drawing
● French Language and French Literature
● Calculus AB
● Chemistry
● English Language and Composition
● English Literature and Composition
