        A very warm welcome
Exceptional Clocks
I don’t know if anyone has ever put together a catalogue of Knibb clocks before – if not, then it’s about time (yes I know!).
The inspiration for this catalogue came when a charming American lady, who I’d never met, called me about six months ago. She said she had a client who had a very small longcase clock in her hallway and that the name on the dial was Joseph Knibb in Oxford.
When you receive a call like that it’s very hard not to think in negative terms because let’s face it, what are the chances? An Oxford Knibb, one of only eight known in the world, sitting in a house in the middle of nowhere in upstate New York – and she wants to sell it – as they say out there – get real!
Well, after considerable use of the iPhone camera, lots of emails and a pleasant flight on British Airways I arrived in New York’s upstate boondocks – then I made a fatal mistake. When I walked into the house the clock was standing behind the owner’s shoulder in the hallway, it looked so small and pretty that I just couldn’t take my eyes off it – the owner was talking to me but very rudely I wasn’t even looking at her. The clock was captivating, even from a distance, and that’s when she realised she had me! You would think that after being in the business for this long I would have learned to be nonchalant and feign interest – but obviously not.
I hope you enjoy not only ‘that’ Knibb but also the other five, because each one has something special to offer, in complexity, beauty and great rarity. As you read this all six clocks will be in my office in Tetbury, ready for your delection; if you prefer I can bring them to you for a private viewing.
Yours sincerely
