4 Joseph Knibb, London
A Charles II ebony Dutch striking Phase I table clock.
Circa 1675 133⁄4 inches high
CASE
The case has an elegant shallow-domed top surmounted by his trademark phase I gilt- brass handle and flanked by four ball finials. The wide case has glazed side panels, foliate-case escutcheons to the front door and the whole clock is raised on four bun feet.
DIAL
The 81⁄4 inch gilt-brass dial is signed Joseph Knibb Londini Fecit beneath the silvered chapter ring which has trident half hour markers and Arabic five minutes with each intervening minute marked with spade symbols. There is a calendar aperture in the finely matted centre and it has finely pierced blued steel hands.
MOVEMENT
The very lovely movement has spring barrels and large twin fusees with gut lines; the going train has a knife-edge verge escapement and the strike train is regulated by a large countwheel on the backplate with twice-12 cut slots for Dutch strike and centred by an engraved rosette. The backplate is engraved with a spray of flowers above an engraved sturgeon and the signature Joseph Knibb Londini Fecit.
