  Rescue mission at the roadside
   Boxes were always
very well tended by the locals
The early 1960s. AA Box 231 At Thorns Cross : Exeter, Newton Abbot A.380 at the junction with the Teignmouth road B.3192. The patrolman is working on a convertible Morris Minor, his AA minivan parked behind – a Ford Cortina Mk1 estate approaching on the road.
All boxes had identification numbers. As you can tell from the photos of locations these boxes were usually placed in remote areas where it may have been hard to find other forms of shelter.

  My father’s AA-certified garage in the 1970s
Mini vans superseded the motorbike and sidecar
AA-certified garages meet the AA's stringent standards for quality of work, adherence to industry standards, value for money, customer service, and several other factors. Certified garages were either independently owned or part of a franchise group (not owned or managed by the AA).
Above : My father was apprenticed to the motor trade in 1926. The photo shows the business as it was in the 1970s as an approved AA-certified establishment.
The ‘AA Sign’ is on the pole below and to the right of the ESSO oval.
Members were supplied with a handbook. Information included the newest road signs, intelligent driving techniques, first aid advice, appointed AA garage locations, and pointers to diagnose problems yourself. AA hotels and various road maps also featured extensively.
