Sam Spink and a couple of other Roadrunner friends visited Adelaide for the HOLDEN ENTHUSIASTS WEEKEND. A ‘Holden Heritage Bus Tour’ and
a visit to the ‘National Motor Museum’ for the ‘Holden Heroes Exhibition’ .
Mal and Diane Jacobson and I flew down to SA for a long weekend, landing in Adelaide at 6pm Saturday.
The weekend event was organised via the FXFJ Car Club Adelaide – a great mob just like our Roadrunners! They were all very welcoming and pleased to see the visitors from Queensland.
Leader of the expedition was Don Lofler author of the Holden books, who many of our members will have heard of. Holden used to fly Don around, all expenses paid, to gather the content for his books.
(Sam has the whole set of books: a series of 7: Ed.)
The HeritageTour was on Sunday... we joined a group of 53, the youngest was 13 travelling with his dad. We were ferried around in a bus visiting a variety of sites by special permission, not open to general public, through the influence of Don ‘Mr Holden’.
It was a very full day – fantastic and enjoyable – we had lunch ‘on the run’ and we were really tired at tea time. We all crashed out in the evening with a take-away!!
Undoubtedly the highlight of the day was the Woodville body manufacturing plant.
Monday was off to Burwood...
5 of us went to Burwood: Di and Mal, me and Don and Stewy who had suggested and set up the whole weekend.
We were there ALL day getting thrown out at closing time! The highlight for us was seeing the first Holden FX.
If you are really interested allow more than one day to see it all at Birdwood – I wish we had allowed 2 days, and I will definitely go back for another visit.
