The gearbox was also a
pandoras box of bits with
incorrect cam indexing
parts, (also changed
during 1970).
So eventually correct parts
were located and fitted
after a lot of second
guessing and hair pulling.
At this stage I was nearly
ready to give up on this
one and take a holiday,
but after looking at my
other restorations in the
shed I knew this one
deserved a place in the
lineup..
The frame was stripped,
sandblasted and powder
coated gloss black along
with other parts, fork legs,
swinging arm, engine
brackets, etc and looked
fabulous. Fork parts were
again a problem with some parts supplied from a
68 model and guess what, yep they were
different – back to the drawing board. Eventually
new seals, springs and damper sleeves were
fitted to make up a new pair of front forks. All this
time I was researching the internet for other
required parts, wiring loom, headlight, tail light,
warning lights, gauges, switches, chains, chain-
guard, seat, petrol tank, the list goes on and on
… … …
New stainless rims and spokes were ordered
from the U.K. and after restoring the wheel hubs
and machining the braking surfaces I assembled
the wheels and trued them before fitting new
tyres and balancing both. Phew! I'm getting tired
just thinking about all of this work and it's
associated problems. Anyway, the engine is now
fitted to the rolling frame and wiring is being
sorted as we speak.
It's now been 14 months since starting this
project as I have not been in a hurry to complete.
It's getting close to being finished now (about a
month or two). If any persons reading this blurb
would like to know more or would like to visit and
discuss any aspects I would love to hear from
you.
P.S. pics show start and progress of project.
Thanks for taking the time to read about my
little project.
