The track was ripped incredibly deep this year at RedBud, making it crucial to lay down a fast time in the early practice sessions. The progression of the roughness and ruttiness of the track was quick, but Mellross managed to score the sixteenth fastest time as Duclos laid down the forty-fourth fastest.
The Wisconsin native lined up in the consolation race and nailed the start, jumping out to an early lead ahead of the ensuing pack. He led the opening lap and settled into second position for the next three, turning a comfortable pace at the front of the field, but he would fall back to fifth place on the final lap and miss the transfer position by one spot. Nonetheless, he was able to race the second moto as an alternate after another rider pulled out.
The first 250 moto was a barn burner and Mellross secured a start inside the top twenty through the twisty pair of opening corners. The CycleTrader.com | Rock River | Yamaha rider made some im- mediate progress and began to climb the ranks, jumping up to sev- enteenth position by the third lap. The Australian found himself in
a battle with Austin Root, but he continued to improve -- advancing as far as fifteenth place until Jordon Smith came storming through towards the top ten. Mellross held onto sixteenth briefly, but a
