Gerloff was able to make his way back around the young Californian down the back straight, but the race was halted due to a red flag situation. In the eight lap restart, Gerloff managed to stick with the leading duo right off the bat, but his teammate began to disappear into the Texas sunset. He found himself in a heated battle with the M4 ECSTAR Suzuki of Valentin Debise for the majority of the race as the two of them attempted to sort out the podium in the final stages. Gerloff had the advantage on the last lap as they headed into the final sector, but he wasn’t able to hold off a divebomb from the Frenchman in turn twenty that took his line away, subsequently forcing him back to third position at the checkered flag.
