Mysterious Monolith Found In Southwest Utah
By Ben Hooper
Nov. 24 (UPI) -
- Authorities in Utah said they are investigating the origins of mysterious mono-
lith spotted stick- ing out of the ground in a rural area in the south- western part of the state.
The Utah
Department of Public Safety said members of the Aero Bureau were in a helicop- ter helping to count bighorn sheep for the
state Division of Wildlife Resources when they spotted something far more unusual on the ground.
Pilot Bret Hutchings said the silver-colored metal monolith was seen sticking out of the ground in the middle of some red rock. He said the struc- ture appeared to be 10-12 feet high and seemed to have been inten- tionally planted, rather than merely dumped out of an aircraft.
Hutchings said the scene was reminiscent of the black monolith from 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The pilot said he suspects the monolith is the work of an artist rather than extra-
terrestrial beings.
"I'm assuming it's some new wave artist or some- thing or, you know, somebody that was a big [2001] fan," Hutchings told KSL-TV.
The Department of Public Safety said an investiga- tion into the object's origins is ongoing.
"It is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on federally man- aged public lands, no matter what planet you're from," the depart- ment said.
