Third Grand Canyon Tourist Dead in 8-day Span
For the third time in just an eight- day period, a Grand Canyon tourist is dead.
The latest victim, a 67-year-old male visitor to Grand Canyon National Park, lost his life on Wednesday, said officials. The unidentified man plunged nearly 400 feet from the South Rim, according to the National Park Service.
Authorities declined to explain how the man fell, but the park’s helicopter was able to recover his body, reported ABC News.
The latest casual-
ty sparked a warning from park officials.
“Grand Canyon National Park encourages all visitors to have a safe visit by stay- ing on designated trails and walk- ways, always keeping a safe distance from the edge of the rim and staying behind railings and fences at overlooks,” park officials said in a release.
The 67-year-old man is the first Grand Canyon National Park casualty of 2019, although a Hong Kong tourist fatal- ly fell into the gorge from a Hualapai reserva- tion outside the
park on March 28. That death occurred near the Grand Canyon Skywalk, an out- look hovering over a 1,000-foot- high cliff. The man was snap- ping photos at the time of his untimely demise, said officials.
Two days before that man’s death, another person was found dead in a wooded area of park. The body was located near a hiking trail, said authorities.
In 2018, 17 peo- ple fell to their death at Grand Canyon National Park, according to The Associated Press.
