I’ve been somewhat indifferent when it comes to public breastfeeding, but there are just some times when you need to put your foot down. After a 72-year-old mother begins breastfeeding her 42-year-old son in the local KFC seems like a good time.
Is breast feeding in pub- lic ever okay? This age old question is now in the news again, this time with a twist.
A KFC manager in Mississippi asked a 76- year old woman to leave after she started breast feeding her 42-year old son in the middle of the restaurant. Customers in the restaurant expressed
shock and disgust at the incident, which clearly did not fit the normal mother and son profile.
Linda Berrety and her son Michael were not embarrassed, and she defended her
actions. “It’s my right as a mother to breastfeed my child,” says Mrs. Berrety. “If people don’t agree with the way I raise my son, that’s their problem. I have raised a great man, beautiful, tall, who still lives and stays with me. I think I’ve done a great job as a mother and don’t appreciate get- ting insulted and expelled just because I decided to breastfeed my child a lit- tle longer than other mothers.”
One customer in the restaurant was not as understanding, referring to the behavior of the two as ‘gross indecency’ , ‘incest’, ‘some fetish type of porno’.
Now it appears that it’s not the woman and her son who are in trouble. It’s KFC. Their spokesperson Joycelyn Binoy moved quickly to apologize to Mrs. Berrety, clearly fearing that KFC may not have legal standing in this inci- dent. The United States Bill of Rights does pre- vent women who breast feed in public from dis- crimination, and does not in any way include an age limit.
