A family walking into a Denny's restaurant in Grand Chute for dinner last week rescued their 3-year-old son after he fell into a grease trap.
The boy stepped onto a plastic cover and fell into the 4-foot-deep pit of cold grease, Matt Kasriel, Grand Chute fire division chief, said Tuesday.
His family pulled the boy out shortly before 5 p.m. Friday. When firefighters were dispatched to Denny's, 3470 W. College Ave., the initial report was that a 3-year-
old had fallen into sewage but by the time they arrived dispatchers told them it was a grease trap with a man- hole cover. The pit was about two feet in diame- ter.
"There was about 4 feet of cold grease in the trap at the time. I don't know the volume of the pit," said Kasriel, adding that he didn't know whether the boy was fully submerged in the pit. "He was completely covered in the grease upon arrival of the fire personnel but he had already been removed at that point."
The boy, whose name
was not released, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Fire crews temporarily secured three plastic manhole covers of grease pits behind the restaurant and referred the incident to the public health department. The company responsible for maintaining the grease pit covers took additional measures to secure them, said Kasriel.
A call to Denny's in Grand Chute was referred to Denny's regional manager Mark Enders, who did not immediately return a phone message.
