Girl, 9, Who Suffered up to 300 Seizures A Day Returns Home After Cannabis Treatment
By Rob Waugh
A nine-year-old girl who suffered up to 300 epileptic seizures a day has been able to return home after being treat- ed with cannabis oil – after a law change in Britain earlier this year.
Teagan Appleby from Aylesham, near Dover came near to death five times over the sum- mer, before the law changed to allow treatment with CBD oil this autumn.
She has not had a daytime seizure since then, and has been able to
return home.
Mother Emma Appleby said on a Just Giving page, ‘Teagan is 9 years old and suffers from a rare genetic condition called Idic15.
‘Epilepsy can come as part of this condition. Unfortunately Teagan has a
very severe case of epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.
‘Teagan can have up to as many as 300 seizures a day. These present in all different severity and types of seizures. We have tried multi- ple epilepsy
medications over the years and even had a VNS fitted two years ago with unfortunately no success.’
Her parents raised money for treatment abroad, before the law changed in Britain.
The Home Secretary Sajid
Javid announced this year that the NHS will offer prescriptions for CBD oil from November 1, prescribed via specialists for a limited range of conditions.
‘Cannabidiol’ (CBD), is a chemical from cannabis which campaigners claim helps with diseases includ- ing cancer and Crohn’s dis- ease.
Crucially, CBD products don’t contain any THC, the chemi- cal in cannabis which causes the high – so it’s legal to use in the UK.
