He Woke To find $123m In His Bank Account
Liam Mannix
Nobody at the Commonwealth Bank seemed overly con- cerned when customer Matthew Pearce told staff the bank had given him $123 million by mis- take.
They just laughed and shrugged their shoul- ders, Mr Pearce told Channel Nine.
When he contacted CommBank, he says a customer service repre- sentative laughed at his story and said, 'Oh, that's great.'
The Melbourne glazier awoke in November last year to find his phone telling him that a small personal bank balance had somehow risen overnight to the princely sum of $123,456,789.01.
"It [his banking app] actually gave me the option to transfer the money and BPAY it, so I could actively transfer money into someone else's account," he told Channel Nine.
"I was pretty shocked about it. I thought they'd actually paid me the money thinking I was
someone else."
When he contacted CommBank, he says a customer service repre- sentative laughed at his story and said, "Oh, that's great."
He told Channel Nine that "nothing was done" about his mystery windfall for two full weeks, when another
bank repre- sentative called him to say there had been a "glitch in the system and it can happen some- times".
His original bank balance has been restored. A spokesman for
CommBank told Channel Nine the bank was inves- tigating the glitch.
Mr Pearce approached the media to tell his story after reading the story about Sydney student Christine Jiaxin Lee, 21, who spent her accidental $4.6 million windfall from her Westpac account on millions of dollars of designer fashion.

Penis Transplant Patient Now "Complete Man"
The recipient of the first US penis transplant has said he is looking for- ward to walking out of hospital a “complete” man.
Thomas Manning was upbeat on Wednesday as he continued to recover from the 15-hour operation, which took place last week at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
The 64-year-old, from Halifax, Massachusetts, said he does not feel any pain and that the swelling and discoloura- tion of his new organ appear to be diminish- ing.
Doctors had hoped to release him sometime this week, but Mr Manning said he will first undergo a largely cosmetic procedure on Monday.
Mr Manning’s penis was amputated in 2012 after he was diagnosed with penile cancer.
Doctors are optimistic he will be urinating nor- mally again in a few weeks and will eventu- ally regain the ability to function sexually. Mr Manning says he is in no rush.
