A New York woman is suing Kellogg’s for at least $5 million because the com- pany’s strawberry Pop-Tarts alleged- ly don’t have enough actual strawberries.
The New York Post reports Elizabeth Russett has filed a class- action lawsuit accusing Kellogg’s of mis- leading con- sumers about the contents of its popular breakfast pastries. The fruit filling in Whole Grain Frosted Strawberry Pop- Tarts Toaster Pastries is mostly comprised of other fruits, like pears and apples, she claims.
According
to TMZ, the suit claims the other fruits are not enough to provide the same nutri- tional benefits of
strawberries. The list of ingredients on the back of the box reportedly sa ys the filling is made with “2% or less” of pears, apples, and strawberries.
Similar lawsuits have claimed other food prod- ucts don’t live up
to their names, including allega- tions Subway’s tuna sandwich doesn’t contain actual tuna.
According to the Post, strawberry was one of the original Pop-Tarts flavors when the product launched in 1963, along
with blueberry, brown sugar cin- namon and apple currant. The toaster pastries were originally unfrosted due to concerns that the frosting would melt off, but frost- ed versions were successfully launched in 1967.
Comedian
Jerry Seinfeld is reportedly produc- ing, directing and starring in an upcoming
Netflix movie about Pop-
Tarts called “Unfrosted.” The “Seinfeld” star co- wrote the script with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder,
chronicling the breakfast pastry’s origin and his longtime obses- sion with it.
“When I was a kid and they invented the Pop Tart, that back of my head blew off,” Seinfeld said in a standup comedy special.
