Steps Taken To Ban Cat Declawing In New York
New York came closer to Becoming the first U.S. Nation to outlaw cat declawing on Tuesday. Both chambers of the state legislature passed a ban to the feline surgery except for thera- peutic reasons.
Gubernatorial spokesman Jason Conwall said that Governor Andrew Cuomo hasn’t yet determined if he’ll sign it into law.
Linda Rosenthal, a Democrat from Manhattan, said that Cat declaw- ing is dreadful, but often-prac- ticed surgery that contributes to a lifetime of pain and distress for thousands of cats. “Now every kitty and cat in New York State lands on its feet
as we all prepare to make New York the very best state for cats to live in America.”
The bill permits declawing only for therapeutic purposes like”trauma or abnormal state
from the claw, an existent or recur- ring illness, and infection, which compromises your cat’s health.”
The fine for viola- tion would be up to $1000. Senate passed The bill with 48-12, stat-
ed Alexander Marion, spokesman for Senator Michael Gianaris, a Democrat from Queens who’s deputy majority leader and spon- sored the bill from his cham- ber. It passed the Assembly with a
vote of 92-27, based on live video of the pro- ceeding.
The New York State Veterinary Medical Society rejected the sug- gested ban on declawing, also referred to as onychectomy.
“It must stay an available alterna- tive when a cat’s health is at stake, but also every time a customer’s health needs suggest they should have their pet declawed and also the alternate is abandonment or euthanasia,” the non-profit society of 2,000 veterinarians said in a statement.
That may contain cats who often scratch and reside with an owner that has a weakened immune system and so faces a higher chance of infection.
Declawing is ille- gal in several European nations and a few U.S. cities.
