Man Spends 43years In Wheelchair On Wrong Diagnosis
(AFP) A Portuguese man spent 43 years in a wheelchair because of a mistaken medical diag- nosis, finally re-learning to walk only in his fifties, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
When Rufino Borrego was 13, he was diag- nosed by a Lisbon hospi- tal as having incurable muscular dystrophy, the Jornal de Noticias report- ed.
After that he used a wheelchair to get around for more than four decades -- until a neurol- ogist realised in 2010 that he in fact suffered from a different disease that weakens the mus- cles, myasthenia.
The rare disease can be treated simply by taking asthma medication -- and just a year after his
new diagnosis, Borrego was able to walk for the first time to his usual neighborhood cafe.
"We thought it was a mir- acle," Manuel Melao, owner of the cafe in Alandroal, southeast Portugal, told the news-
paper.
Now aged 61, Borrego is able to live a normal life, requiring only two phys- iotherapy sessions a year.
He insists he harbours no ill-feelings against the
hospital that made the original diagnosis, acknowledging that myasthenia was almost unknown in the medical profession in the 1960s.
"I just want to make use of my life," he said.

Weight On Cafeteria Diet
BAYTOWN, TX (KPRC/CNN) -
A Texas cafeteria worker lost 100 pounds over the last year thanks mostly to eating her school's food.
Each day Tammy McRae wel- comes a waiting line of curious and hungry kids at Carver Elementary School.
The now 160-lb. cafeteria man- ager has spent the past year eating every bit of the food her young charges say they enjoy eating.
She carried her excess weight with her for 17 years after the birth of her second child.
"I was going to die, if I was not, if I didn't do something about the issue," she said.
So in September 2015, as the kids started up a new school year, she ditched her old diet of fast food supersized.
McRae started taking cues from her own cafeteria menu, eating the breakfast and lunch every single day.
"And then at night I would just go home and have a little bit of fruit or a little bit of yogurt," she said.
By Christmas, she was well on her way to shedding the weight, and with smarter decisions, she started feeling better about her- self.
"And not because I'm thinner because I'm healthier," she said.
