Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Pig Ear Dog Treats: CDC
By Elizabeth Taylor
(WSIL) -- A treat for dogs could be making their own- ers sick, accord- ing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Researchers at the CDC
are investigating the cases of 45 peoplewho have been infected with salmonella.
45 people in 13 states have been diagnosed with the illness, includ- ing 3 in Illinois and 3 in Missouri. 12 people have been hospitalized
but no one has died.
Officials said 34 people who have been diagnosed with salmonella had contact with a dog before they got sick. Of that group, 17 had contact with pig ear dog treats or were in contact with dogs that had received the treats.
No common sup- plier has been identified.
The CDC has some safety
tips to help you stay healthy while feeding your pet:
• Always wash your hands with
soap and water right after han- dling pet food or treats; this is the most important step to prevent ill- ness.
• When possible, store pet food and treats away from where human food is stored or pre- pared and away from reach of young children.
• Don't use your pet's feeding bowl to scoop food. Use a clean, dedicated scoop, spoon, or cup.
• Always follow any storage instructions on pet food bags or containers.
Florida Woman Accused of Urinating In Shop's Ice Cream Maker
Sam Hussey, NBC
A Florida woman is facing time in jail after she was caught on cam- era picking her nose, sticking her hands in ice cream and later using an ice cream maker as a toilet.
Jung Soon Wypcha, 66, was arrested on Monday on charges including criminal mischief and violating Florida's anti- tampering act for her alleged actions at Lu Lu’s Ice Cream Shop in Indian Shores.
Wypcha was seen on video on June 17 using the shop's bath- room with the door wide open on five separate
occasions and not washing her hands, a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report said.
She was then seen walking to a freezer where organic ice cream is stored and put- ting her hands into ice cream containers.
One video showed Wypcha picking her nose and sticking her hands in ice cream, while another showed her opening a freezer door and spitting into ice cream contain- ers.
On June 22, she tried to use the bathroom but couldn't get the locked door open, so she grabbed a bucket used to churn the
ice cream and urinated into it.
She then emptied the bucket in the sink marked "rinse", which is used for washing ice cream folding utensils and mix- ing bowls.
"These actions committed by Jung Soon Wypcha caused the store to close and have approx $2000 worth of product destroyed to ensure public safety," the report noted.
The report didn't indicate whether Wypcha was an employee of the shop.
Wypcha, of St Petersburg, was released on bail late on Monday night.
