More Children Living in Poverty Now Than Before Great Recession
By Kim Leoffler
TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation released today found that more children are living in poverty now than before the great recession. Gary Smithee lives at the Salvation Army in Tyler
with his two sons who have big dreams.
“I want to be a basketball player...Then I can get more money and help people also,” Ashton Smithee, his youngest son, said.
His oldest, Onyx Smithee, says he wants
to take over the world.
“I would put internet everywhere so everyone had internet and water,” he said.
But Smithee currently isn't working, and he wonders how he can help his sons reach their dreams
“Hopefully if I can get one of them into a pri- vate school that would be nice,” he said.
They're not alone. A new report found that in 2013, 22 percent of children in the U.S. were living in poverty. That's up 18 percent from 2008. Here in Texas, The "Texas Kids Count Project" found that a quarter of children, 25% are living
in poverty today.
Gregg Grub with PATH in Tyler says he’s seen an increase in families seek- ing help.
“Last year we saw over 22,000 people come through our doors. 35 percent of those were children,” Grubb explained. “Especially in the summertime...when kids are out of school so the parents have extra costs for daycare they have extra costs for food and, of course, utility bills are higher in the summer as well,” he added.
He says children growing up in poverty take on what he calls "the pover- ty mentality."
“What we see is that chil-
dren grow up to be those adults, like their parents, and they deal with those problems in the same way and they end up being stuck,” Grubb said.
But Smithee says while they may not have much, his children find ways to teach themselves some- thing new every day, which he hopes will help them in the future.
“My oldest son, he loves to read, so he’s always teaching himself some- thing. And the internet is their friends, they know how to work and look up things,” Smithee said.
“Some kids they want to sit and play and do noth- ing, butIguessIgota fluke,” he added.
