Scientists in Uzbekistan are testing “an edible transgenic toma- to vaccine” to counter the COVID virus, reports Anadolu Agency.
Scientists from the Academy of Sciences’ Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics are working to develop an edible vaccine against the virus by alter- ing the genetics of tomatoes, according to a statement issued by the Innovative Department Ministry on Friday.
After two months, seedlings in the center’s laborato- ry will grow toma- toes in the form of a vaccine, and people who eat these tomatoes are expected to produce antibod- ies against the virus, according to the statement.
Scientists cloned the crown part of a coronavirus fou nd in the country and placed it in a plant cell, and as a result, these plant cells acted as a vaccine.
“The experiment showed that the S-protein of the coronavirus, syn- thesized in a
tomato, enters the intestines and awakens the immune system. The produced antibodies will fight the pathogen,” the scientist said, reports Sputnik.
He added that the first phase of clinical trials will begin as soon as the animal exper- iments are com- pleted.
In Oct 2019, the scientists at Standford
were reported to have created a ‘vaccine’ to pro- tect tomato plants.

A Northern Virginia woman with hair over six feet long cut and donated it Thursday morning. And while she's at it, she set a new Guinness World Record.
Zahab Kamal Khan last cut her hair when she was 13 years old. Now, she's 30. She credits her grandmoth- er's oil for helping keep her hair healthy. She applies it twice a week.
Khan set the record for a new category: "most hair donated to a charity by an individual." She and her dad have dreamed of this day since she was a young girl.
She has decided to donate her hair to children with hair loss.
"I'm kind of nervous and excited to see my short hair, but I'm going to miss my hair," Khan said.
