P. 1

Dear Parents:

Congratulations! You have realized the value of exposing your child to a second language at a
young age. The gift of learning a second language at a young age is priceless; your kids will truly thank 1
you later! Countless adults have told me they struggled through foreign language, in addition to taking
it for years without remembering any of it. If your child starts learning Spanish during the elementary
years, this will never happen to them! Spanish will always come naturally to them and open doors to
         many important advantages.
As your child learns Spanish, they are literally exercising their brain. This learning is sub-conscious, so
as we speak almost 100% Spanish in class, they are learning sounds, vocabulary, grammar, accents,
and intonations without even realizing it. They may think they just came to class and played, when in re-
ality their brains are beginning to absorb a new language with a new set of rules, order, and structure.

The silent period: Explanation of vocabulary:

Though your children are on their way to be-
coming bilingual, please be aware of the term
linguists call the “silent period.” Your child may Many of the words we teach are considered high
be internalizing everything we are doing in class,
but just not speaking yet. This is okay and to be frequency, meaning they are used often in com-
mon speech. Our vocabulary may seem random
expected. It’s just like your 1 1⁄2 year old that at times to you, but the lists are not random; each
understands almost everything you say, but can word has been selected in a specific order for
only articulate 30 words. Allow the process of each class. In addition to those words, there are
acquisition to take place naturally without put-
ting a lot of pressure on your child to “perform” other “silly” words in the mix to aid in storytelling,
conversation, and simply because they are fun!
in Spanish. Each child progresses at a different
speed when it comes to speaking their second
        language.
