Factories & Industrial led the non- residential building types with the most work put in place (+19% on the March 2020 quarter) followed by Education (+16%).

After April’s significant rebounds in volume and value, May’s consent data from Stats NZ (www.stats.govt.nz) show strong but more moderated growth.

Consents by value for the May month: Residential: $1.9 billion (+26.3% on May 2020). Non-residential:$780million(+41%). Total:$2.7billion(+30.2%).

By volume, 4,180 new dwellings were consented in the month (+17.3% on May 2020), of which 1,380 new townhouses, flats & units represent the highest monthly number since records began in 1990.
New standalone houses nevertheless still accounted for over half of all new homes consented in May 2021.
Year to date May 2021, consent values were as follows:
• Residential:$18.3billion(+17.9%on
YTD May 2020).
• Non-residential:$7.9billion(+21%). • Total: $26.2 billion (+18.8%).
By volume, 43,466 dwellings were consented in the year to May 2021 (+17.4% on YTD May 2020), Stats NZ noting a massive 49% rise in consents for townhouses, flats & units.
By region, YTD May 2021 Auckland consents were +28%, Rest of North Island +24%, Canterbury +13% and Waikato +11%.
Stats NZ’s June 2021 building consent data is scheduled for release on 30
July, while the June quarter’s Value
of Building Work put in Place will be released on 6 September. Look to www. harwdarejournal.co.nz for the most timely updates.
