• Allconstruction:$3.2billion (+17.0%).
By volume, 4,547 dwellings were
consented in the month (+0.9% on August 2021), 2,620 of which (57.6%) were multi-unit homes (townhouses, apartments, retirement village units, and granny flats) compared to 1,927 standalone houses.
For year-to-date August 2022, consent values were as follows:
• Residential:$22.8billion(+16.1%on
YTD August 2021)
• Non-residential:$9.2billion(+14.3%) • Allconstruction:$32.7billion
(+16.2%).
In the year ended August 2022, 50,653 new dwellings were consented (+8.9% on YTD August 2021), led again by Canterbury (+23%), Wellington (+18%), Auckland (+7.7%) and Waikato (+3%).
Indeed, the number of homes consented in Canterbury in the year ended August 2022 is now well above the post-earthquake rebuild peak of 7,308 in the year ended December 2014.
Nationally, 27,593 multi-unit homes were consented in the year ended August 2022 (+30% on YTD August 2021), compared to 23,060 standalone houses (–8.9%).
YTD August 2022, growth in the consent value of non-residential buildings was driven by offices etc (+42%), storage buildings (+37% on YTD August 2021), and education (+16%).
The number of dwellings consented per 1,000 residents across New Zealand was 9.9 for the year ended August 2022, compared with 9.1 in the year ended August 2021.
The record number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents was 13.4 in the year ended December 1973.
Stats NZ’s September 2022 building consent data is scheduled for release
