Electricity makes pruning easier
Bahco’s new four-model BCL electric secateur range are robust yet lightweight and comfortable to use with their brushless motors and perfect for a variety of extended or heavy-duty pruning tasks. Blades are of high quality SK5 Japanese steel, so they retain sharpness and are resistant to wear and rust, while the BCL secateurs’ progressive cut with two blade openings is adaptable to a variety of uses. The two top models, the BCL24 and BCL23, have been designed with separate batteries that are carried in a comfortable carrying harness, while the BCL25IB and BCL20IB are cordless, with integrated removable batteries of 54 Wh and 36 Wh respectively.

with a strong connection and contribution to the wider environment.”
Perched on a difficult sloping site involving multiple soil types, shifting water courses and subject to both animal and plant pest species, the project embodies
strong environmental practices such as
eco-sourcing, pest control, reuse of onsite
resources, water management and client
education.
In addition, many of the natives planted were eco-sourced seeds from the local area, while mulch was sourced from locally wind- felled trees and cut down exotic species were left on site to rot away.
Indeed, the owner has become so invested in the garden and its connection to the wider landscape around it, that he is now committed to clearing exotic weeds from the surrounding DOC land and river edges.
In addition to the Supreme Award, Bob’s Cove Retreat and Green Therapy were awarded Premier Awards in the
Environmental and Horticulture categories, and Gold Medals in the Environmental Revegetation & Planting Project Over $50,000 and the Residential Project Horticulture Open Project Value & Property Size Categories.
URBAN PRIVACY AND SERENITY
Shifting now to the rather more genteel environs of Merivale, a handful of blocks north of Hagley Park, local firm Onlandscapes took home this year’s People’s Choice Award for its Rugby Street project.
The brief was to create a serene and private garden
that could be enjoyed both day and night and involved a practically complete makeover of the property, leaving only a large macrocarpa tree and existing hedging.
Features include an exposed concrete nib wall (which provided challenges having had to remove the bracing while the concrete was still curing in order to finish the sides!), and coloured concrete paths and steps which were acid-etched
to compliment the older-style villa home and rise out of the ground to meet the macrocarpa boardwalk that leads to the rear of the property.
As well as the 2022 People’s Choice Award, the Rugby Street project team were also rewarded with a Gold Medal in the Residential Project (Construction) category.
Many other landscapers across New Zealand received award recognition at the Registered Master Landscaper 2022 Landscapes of Distinction Awards across a range of categories. You can see them all at the URL below.

REWARDING EMERGING TALENT
Moving from established landscape professionals to emerging talent now, alongside the Landscapes of Distinction Awards runs the Prebble Seeds Turf World 2022 Young Landscaper of the Year Award.
The competition assesses young landscapers’ practical and workplace-based skills and sees competitors vying for honours across a variety of practical skills and written tests including lawn preparation, planting, paving, small digger operation and more.
“The landscape industry is going from strength to strength, with so much young talent entering the industry and some extraordinary projects being undertaken by businesses throughout New Zealand”
Involving much physical and mental work just the day before the Awards Gala Dinner, the final group of 10 young landscape professionals spent the day at Bark Wholesalers in Papakura, South Auckland, to find out who 2022’s top young landscaper would be.
