JUNE 2022 BUILDING CONSENTS
figures for the June 2022 month from Stats NZ (www.stats.govt.nz) show intentions to build remain at record levels.
By value, the June 2022 consent values were as follows:
• Residential:$1.8billion(–0.4%on
                         Residential building consents – Volume – July 2020-June 2022
• Allconstruction:$2.6billion(+5.5%). By volume, 4,037 dwellings were
consented in the month (–6.5% on June 2021), 2,286 of which (56.6%) were multi- unit homes, comprising townhouses, apartments, retirement village units,
and granny flats, compared to 1,751 standalone houses.
For year-to-date June 2022, consent values were as follows:
• Residential: $22.5 billion (+22.6% on
YTD June 2021)
• Non-residential:$9.0billion(+15.8%) • Total:$31.5billion(+20.6%).
In the year ended June 2022, 50,736 new dwellings were consented (+14.4% on YTD June 2021), led by Canterbury (+33%), Wellington (+21%), Auckland (+14%) and Waikato (+9%).
Most noteworthy again were the 26,823 multi-unit homes consented in the year ended June 2022 (+36% on YTD June 2021), compared to 23,913 standalone houses (–3.0%).
YTD June 2022, growth in the consent value of non-residential buildings was driven by storage buildings (+54% on YTD June 2021), offices etc (+26%), and education (+11%).
The number of dwellings consented per 1,000 residents across New Zealand was 9.9 for the year ended June 2022, compared with the record number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents of 13.4 in the year ended December 1973.
Stats NZ’s July 2022 building consent data is scheduled for release on 31 August, while the June 2022 quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place is due on 5 September, so look to www. hardwarejournal.co.nz for the most timely updates.
