2022’s Supreme Kitchen Design is no show pony
One designer – Natalie Du Bois of Dubois Designer Kitchens & Interiors
in Auckland (www.duboisdesign.co.nz)
– took top honours in both the kitchen and bathroom categories in this year’s NKBA Excellence in Design Awards and was named Designer of the Year to boot.
Natalie was awarded the two
top honours for a magnificent entertainer’s kitchen in a new home as well as for a stunning bathroom for which the term “renovation” is an understatement.
2022’s top kitchen was designed for new a home for a Whanganui family of
five who often entertain up to 25 guests and who wanted a modern look, with an industrial edge.
The brief was to design three separate zones: the main kitchen area with space for multiple cooks; a large butler’s pantry (almost a second
kitchen in fact); and a separate drinks area near the informal living area, away from the main kitchen.
Seeking an industrial look, materials used include concrete plaster effect walls and a rugged concrete Caesarstone island benchtop, with strips in various sizes wrapped around the island.
Lighting accentuates both textures and shapes, creating a highly sculptural and visually interesting central focus within a large space. The judges said:“This is a captivating kitchen, in the true meaning
of the word. The mesmerising layering effect on the island cladding is exceptional, as is the super chic lighting and the soft veneer on the back wall.
“This space has impact, it is tactile, and it has been superbly executed. Features like the folded metal shelves, the island details, and the way the light plays across the layers are just delightful.
“It is incredibly difficult to be original in the kitchen space, but this designer has achieved this. Magnificent.”
