Working through
these “interesting
times”
HI THERE AND welcome to the rst ever “digital rst” edition of NZ Hardware Journal!
As you can see, we’re still here and working hard to bring you some of the latest insights and information from and around the hardware channel – and yes, there’s something di erent this month...
April’s magazine is the rst in our 38-odd year history to hit your desk virtually – and in advance of the physical edition.
It’s not about cutting costs but it is all about speed to market faced with a variety of potential roadblocks.
So, both despite and because of these interesting times we’re living in, here it is. Inevitably, despite having touted speed
to market, some of the information contained in this magazine will have been superseded by subsequent events.
Please bear with me on this – like many of you, we’re a work in progress, adapting and responding to the changing circumstances as quickly as possible.
Talking of changed circumstances, I am grateful to everyone who responded to my supplier survey over 18-20 March.

e results (see pages 18-21) re ect a snapshot in time, just pre-lockdown, and as such I may well follow up with another survey next month to gauge the changes in outlook.
e attitude expressed by those who responded re ects high degrees of uncertainty, greater in the medium than the long term.
And, while you cannot spin that outlook into one of optimism, it does speak of a certain resilience despite the prospect of COVID-19 having a more profound e ect on our world than the GFC.
2020 HARDWARE AWARDS LAUNCH
As you will notice we’re also launching the 2020 Hardware Awards this month.
Adds and alts to this year’s program include reducing Young Retailer of the Year eligibility slightly (to under 32 years of age) and the addition of a Kitchens & Bathrooms category to the Suppliers of the Year.
Both re ect feedback from last year’s experience, so thanks to everyone who contributed to these decisions.
at’s the plan. However as I am sure you’ll appreciate, circumstances may dictate changes to the scheduled program.
We will of course communicate any changes to the 2020 Hardware Awards as and when, but to stay right up to date do visit our Facebook page and the dedicated awards page on our website: www.hardwarejournal.co.nz/awards/ awards-2020/
